Hoopoe, Upupa epops

Local status: Very rare vagrant

This southern European species is a regular spring overshoot to the UK, also occurring in autumn and winter, albeit in smaller numbers. The York area records have reflected this pattern with five of the seven records occurring in April and May, with the other two in late summer and autumn.
